How can we equitably target #COVID19 boosters to marginalized communities? @ewrigleyfield et al. highlight how overreliance on age thresholds reinforces inequity. Alt option? Use area-based measures (e.g. CDC #SVI, which predicts case/death/vax rates: ht

How an age-based vaccination strategy is worse at reducing COVID racial mortality inequity than using geography (targeting economically deprived neighborhoods) and race based eligibility strategies.
Fantastic work out the oven by @ewrigleyfield and colleagues. An ingenious mix of demography, sociology and inequality. Already got my glass of wine to spend a nice rainy evening in great company!

These results are relevant to allocating scarce resources generally (incl any future booster shots targeted at particular variants; vax distribution abroad; & next pandemics) bc they remind us not to focus on intersectional risk one dimension at a time

Immensely important research. Thread below:
Early in the vaccine rollout, there was tons of debate about "efficiency vs equity." We think this is a false choice: allocating vaccines more equitably would ALSO have been more efficient at matching a limited supply to the pops at highest risk https:/
Just moving eligibility to young ages fast, in recognition that BIPOC people were dying younger, was a bad strategy. And not only because it created more potential for selective uptake of low-risk people among the eligible, crowding out high-risk https://
Blanket-targeting micro-neighborhoods at highest risk--trying to vax EVERYONE, regardless of age--also might've been a good strategy surprisingly early on--but mostly if it meant that older (eligible regardless) ppl there got vaxed sooner due to outreach

We wondered how well 'race-neutral' eligibility strategies do--specifically, geographic ones. Could they improve on age alone when it comes to matching vaccines to highest risk & racial equity? We find, YES--though not as effective as using race direc
